Last week was a big milestone for Tom. He hit 10 years as a brain tumor survivor! We had a great day celebrating with one of his sisters and one of our nephews. We are optimistic we will be able to take a trip to celebrate next month. We hit another big milestone yesterday as well-Tom has now gone 4 weeks without a seizure! It is the longest he has made it since this year started. He had a very bad seizure on the morning of 2/14 when he woke up. Thankfully he was still in bed and not hurt but the seizure and recovery took a very long time. We have both been trying to recover from the trauma of it, day by day. For Tom it meant the seizures could literally hit him anytime, anywhere even after a good night of sleep. I stayed with him and talked to him as he went through it and watched the minutes tick by on the clock not knowing if he would be okay at the end of it or not. His doctors added in another medication and we are hopeful that is making the difference. We have had him under constant supervision since that seizure but will now start experimenting with him leaving him alone for short periods. His scans have been stable since November which is when he finished his year of chemo ans Avastin soon after. Right now his doctor said we are letting his brain and body heal from all the treatment he has had. Options in the future include immunotherapy, more chemo or possibly more surgery. For now we are very thankful for the break. His medical team has been so supportive and helpful to us as we have struggled through this recent batch of seizures. Despite everything we have also been trying to get him out and keep doing things. He got to enjoy a 90 minute class from the front row from one of his favorite Zumba presenters, he took a yoga seminar, we rode our bikes to get ice cream and we have enjoyed a wonderful visit from his sisters who spoiled us along with a side trip to Astoria. Our goal remains to get him back on the mountain bike. Our local friends have stepped in and helped so much, taking Tom to appointments, bringing us food and keeping him company while I teach. I am always amazed at all the wonderful people we have in our lives.
